Motivation Monday: The killer bike ride!

This past week, John and I have been doing a little research on the Ironman Syracuse 70.3 course. This will be our first half Ironman this year (John’s first ever!), and it’s on June 22nd. Just in case you’re wondering, no it’s not too early to start looking at the race course over a month away. :) Actually, typically I wouldn’t look at the course so early, but we had talked with a professional triathlete at our local pool and told her we were doing Syracuse. She informed us that it was one of the hardest 70.3 bike courses. Ohhhhhh…. So, that’s why we started looking up info on it! Here’s what the bike course profile looks like. Notice the 1,000 foot climb in the first 12 miles!70.3Pretty nasty start, eh? Yea, that’s what we thought. Luckily for us (or perhaps unlucky!), our bike trainers have the capability of connecting to the computer, and thus we can download any Ironman bike course and simulate the whole ride! We decided to do this yesterday as my long ride. image (9)If I were to sum up the entire ride in one word, it would be “wretched”! It was so hard! My legs were burning after just 4 minutes of riding because I basically started climbing right away and felt like I never stopped! When I finally got to the half-way point, my legs hated me. image (7)I wanted to quit so badly, but I told myself to keep going. Then again with an hour left in the ride, I was so tired, my legs were screaming, and my back was sore, but somehow I kept going. Not only was I able to finish the whole course, but I also was able to do it in my zone 3 power (the power zone I’m supposed to be in for racing). I was so proud of myself! By the time I finished, I was completely dead, but quite fulfilled! It was just the accomplishment I needed after last week’s failed bike test. We botoh plan to bike the course a couple more times on the simulator so we can get more used to it! Also, sidenote, I sweat like CRAZY! Check out the huge puddle on my mat-most of that was just from the first hour of the ride! Nasty, I know…image (8)

How was your weekend? Did you have any motivational workouts? The thought of this one is definitely going to mentally power me through my week!
